Nassau County is located in western Long Island, with Queens and Brooklyn bordering it to the west, and Suffolk County on the east. Outside of New York City, Nassau is the most densely populated county, thanks to it being considered one of the central counties within the New York metropolitan area. Nassau County has quite a history and was named after the Dutch Prince William of Nassau. Nassau County is home to two national protected wildlife areas- Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. Nassau County has quite a diverse population including Italian Americans, Irish, and Jewish people. There are only two cities and three towns that make up Nassau County- The cities are Glen Cove, Long Beach, and the towns include Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay. Notable people that live in Nassau County include basketball superstar Carmelo Anthony, Marc Anthony, as well as Carson Daly.

Like many other counties in the United States, Nassau County hasn’t been exempt from the drug epidemic. Nassau County has been hit extremely hard, and overdose deaths are affecting families everywhere.

A recent and dangerous trend has contributed to a surge in drug overdose deaths. Heroin and fake pressed prescription pills have been cut with fentanyl and carfetanil. Fentanyl is a “man-made” opioid 100 times more powerful than morphine. Carfentanil is 100 times more powerful than fentanyl, which makes it 10,000 times more powerful than morphine! In 2017, Nassau County had 545 drug overdose deaths. As of September 2018, Nassau County has already surpassed 2017’s figure with a current death toll of 584.

There are plenty of sober activities around Nassau County. Make some new friends, learn a new skill, and have fun in an environment that doesn’t revolve around drinking or drugs.
