Maryland Addiction Recovery Center is happy to be aligning with the national organization Young People in Recovery and working with the new YPR-Maryland chapter to create a “recovery ready Maryland”. Young People in Recovery is a national advocacy organization, which aims to influence public policy, making it easier for youth to find and maintain their recovery from addiction. YPR establishes city and state chapters, which act as vessels, carrying out the organizations vision and mission. The local chapters of YPR wear two hats: Advocacy & Action.
Unlike some of the hotbeds of recovery throughout the United States like Southern California, Arizona, South Florida and Minnesota, Maryland as a state is lacking in a number of different areas for young people entering recovery from addiction. While state mandates like the Naloxone Access and Overdose Good Samaritan Laws actually put Maryland ahead of some other states, there are a number of areas that addiction recovery in Maryland is behind the curve in creating a recovery friendly community. Some examples include the fact that Baltimore County has almost no sober houses or recovery residences. In fact, sober living throughout the state is extremely scarce. Additionally, much of the state still harbors ill feelings and stigma towards addiction and the recovery community. Families are unfamiliar with addiction treatment resources in Baltimore and drug rehabs in Maryland. People in recovery have a hard time finding jobs. Overall, Maryland is not the friendliest of places for someone in recovery from addiction.
For this reason, Maryland Addiction Recovery Center saw an opportunity to align with Young People in Recovery and their new Maryland chapter. Some of the things in the works are a “Unity in the Park” community event for all in recovery, seeking recovery and community members that support addiction recovery at Oregon Ridge on Sunday, August 24th. This event will feature several local organizations, foundations and addiction treatment centers in Maryland as well as members of numerous 12 Step fellowships and community members in an effort to unify the recovery community. On Wednesday, September 10th, Maryland Addiction Recovery Center and YPR-Maryland will help The Nikki Perlow Foundation during their community event featuring a talk by Earl Hightower. Information on both events will be available soon.
“With limited funding and a scarcity of resources, collaboration in the Recovery Community is needed more than ever,” said Justin Luke Riley, President & CEO of Young People in Recovery. “YPR National, YPR Maryland, and the Maryland Addiction Recovery Center is excited to strategically collaborate in order to help the most amount of people.”
The stigma of addiction is a difficult stigma to overcome. Fortunately, organizations like YPR and Maryland Addiction Recovery Center are doing their part to increase awareness about addiction treatment in Maryland and throughout the country, create additional resources and influence collaboration between those in recovery, the community and professional and community organizations.
